Stay in a nostalgic town house
with 250 years of history

STORY OF SHIROSHITA-KOYADO KOJIYA Immerse yourself in local history by staying in a former sake brewery renovated into a beautiful modern machi-ya townhouse.

Stay in part of the former Kanda Sake Brewery, a National Important Cultural Property, and spend a leisurely time exploring the traditional townscape of the Joto area with its long rows of old machi-ya townhouses.

The Former Kanda Sake Brewery

This historical site tracesits legacy back to the latter half of the Edo period in the mid-18th century.
Located in the Mimasaka domain, the brewery was founded in 1758 when the 6th generation owner decided to try his hand at making sake and gave it the name "Kanda-ya".The Mimasaka area was well-known for its high-quality rice, and its cool climate and bountiful streams made it the perfect place to start a sake enterprise. The chief brewer and workers left their farming villages seasonally to live and work on site, and they spent the late autumn to early spring concentrating on sake production. By the end of the Edo period in the mid-1800s, Kanda-ya's dedication to the craft of sake earned it the patronage of the rulers of Tsuyama domain, and it became one of the grandest shops in the bustling town surrounding Tsuyama Castle.

ABOUT KANDA SAKE BREWERY

From the end of the Edo period in the mid-19th century to recent times, additions to the main buildings and new warehouses made Kanda-ya Brewery one of the largest properties in the historic Joto townscape preservation area. Due to its grand scope, it was also designated as a National Important Cultural Property. In its new incarnation, the four 2-storied structures that made up the Kanda-ya residences have been converted into three townhouse accommodations and one lounge building. A new history of Kanda-ya brewery has begun.

ABOUT KANDA SAKE BREWERY

The Joto area surrounding Kojiya has long been known for the beautiful 2-story townhouses that line its streets. Many of these traditional structures still stand today, and the quaint scene of elegant eaves stretching out bring the charm of long-lost Japan to life. There are many cafes and restaurants, as well as art and cultural attractions that make their home in the townhouses now. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the charming streets.
